Connect a provider and choose a default model

Add an API key or sign in with a Codex subscription, then choose the model Prokop uses by default. Claude Code and Codex CLI need no provider.

15-second silent walkthrough, recorded from a real Prokop instance. Written steps below.

Before you start

Have Prokop running and an API key for OpenRouter, DeepSeek, MiniMax, or Z.AI (Coding Plan), or a ChatGPT account for Codex. Need to install Prokop? Follow Get started first.

Using Claude Code or Codex CLI? You don't need a provider for them: if the CLI is installed and logged in on the server machine, pick Claude Code or Codex from the model chip in the session header. See Use your Claude Code or Codex login.

Connect with an API key

  1. Open Settings and go to Providers & models.
  2. Click your provider's row to open it.
  3. Click Set Key, paste your key, and press Enter.

The row now reads Connected. Keys are stored in ~/.prokopai/.env on the server and are never sent to the client.

Or sign in with Codex

Open the Codex (ChatGPT) row instead and follow its sign-in flow for your ChatGPT account. You can keep several accounts and choose which one new runs use.

Choose your default model

At the top of Providers & models, choose the default provider, model, and variant. Prokop uses this model when no other is selected, for example for session titles. You can still pick a different model for each session.

Next, start your first session, or add an existing project folder. For more detail, see the configuration reference.
